Samuel Zborowski

Every government has its own path / And it treads... on the spirit’s head while it walks down / Then there must be some invisible form / That lives in the rainbow azure

The Samuel Zborowski theatrical project is based on an untitled manuscript by Juliusz Słowacki - the author’s version of the drama which is far removed in its structure from the published, canonical editions by Juliusz Kleiner and Julian Krzyżanowski. It seems that the time has come to examine the manuscript. As Michał Kuziak, a scholar of the literature of Polish Romanticism, argues, “prior editors have altered the text greatly to adjust it to their aesthetic standards, and have thus deprived Polish literature of the text's original, revolutionary dramatic form - polyphonic, epiphanic, transgressive, reminiscent of the contemporary concepts of performance.”

While being aware of the new possibilities of interpretation that stem from the manuscript’s text and that are linked to the play’s performative character, we are going to concentrate on extracting the theological and political dimension of the drama, we will focus on presenting the process of the emergence and forming of a strong subject, we will finally touch upon the problem of individual rebellion in the name of an “individual right to salvation.” Through this we will enter into a discussion with Sprawa (“Issue”), a play directed by Jerzy Jarocki, and with the famous book by Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz. Both works tend to emphasize - in the case of Słowacki’s play as well as in their interpretation of historical events connected to Samuel Zborowski and Jan Zamoyski - the issues of identity.

The production of the performance was subsidized as part of “Klasyka Żywa,” the Competition for the Staging of Historic Works of Polish Literature, carried out in celebration of 250 years of public theatre in Poland. The competition is organised by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute.
