Forefathers' Eve

Forefathers' Eve constitute the last piece of a three-part Romantic project realized by Paweł Rodziński in PTB in the last years.

The performance is an attempt at “reclaiming” and rationalizing the Romantic narration which has been manipulated and vulgarized for decades, and continues to be exploited by politicians, the Catholic church, the market and the media, and other groups that create new versions of old mythology on its basis. Paweł Wodziński’s interpretation of Mickiewicz’s Dziady extends beyond the simple schema that puts the text in the context of death, mourning and national martyrdom. The Bydgoszcz staging renders it as a play on formulating community and strengthening identity. Filled with anger and rage, the story talks about the ritual which binds marginalised groups. It was the intention of the creators to examine the text in an ironic and critical way and to strip it of the banal interpretations that have been layered on the work. They also wanted to focus our attention on the fact that Dziady is more than a literary text, but a complete identity project which can give raise to various doubts today.

In the excellent Bydgoszcz staging of Dziady, Wodziński raises questions about the rationale of the angry and the excluded - Łukasz Drewniak, Przekrój
